Also, a large donation of interesting books from the estate library of Maxwell Geismar, the distinguished literary critic and author of critical works on Henry James, Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, and other American writers. An esteemed critic and literary historian, Maxwell Geismar (1909 – 1979) rose to prominence in the 1940s with the publication of Writers in Crisis: The American Novel, 1929-1940 (Houghton, 1942). That work and his revisionist Henry James and the Jacobites (Houghton, 1963) garnered him a reputation as a “radical” commentator on American literature. He once summed up his beliefs fairly succinctly: “I despise and detest all literary fabrications (and there are many), fads, hoaxes, etc. and all writers who know but do not reveal the truth about their world and their times.” Over the course of his distinguished career, Geismar received numerous accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship (1943-44) and a 1952 National Institute of Arts and Letters Grant in Literature.
NOTE: Geismar books that are signed, inscribed, or annotated by him, are identified with a pink slip inside the book.Like sports titles? There is a small collection of signed books, mostly on sports, presented to Frank DeFord.
There are Limited Edition Club titles. More than a dozen titles in slipcases, among them the elusive and complete eight-volume, three-set edition of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes titles.
