The Friends of the Weston Library are sponsoring some exciting programs at the Weston Library in October! All of our programs are free and open to the public, but registration is required by either signing up at or calling the Library at 203-222-BOOK.
ANATOMY OF FEAR – A SPECIAL HALLOWEEN EVENT
Come and discover an appreciation for the animals that we are traditionally taught to fear. Chris Evers, Founder & Director of Animal Embassy, and some of his most intriguing live Animal Ambassadors will visit the Weston Public Library on Saturday, October 16 from 4:00-5:00 PM, to share myths and legends regarding a diversity of nocturnal creatures. Have you ever encountered a snake, a lizard or a tarantula? This is an amazing opportunity to learn about the behavior and appearance of these animals. This event is suitable for families.
LUNCH AND LEARN – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA
On Tuesday, October 19, from 12:00-1:30 PM, Adria Pearl-Belport, who has 25 years experience as a marketing and promotion strategist and has spent the last two years consulting to clients on integrating social media into their traditional marketing efforts, will introduce basic social media techniques and online marketing tools. Please feel free to bring your lunch. The Friends will be providing dessert and drinks.
SPECIAL PERFORMANCE BY WESTON’S AWARD WINNING PAUL BOGAEV
To inaugurate the 2010-2011 programming session, we are hosting a special performance by music director, arranger, conductor and composer Paul Bogaev. Bogaev, A Weston resident, will entertain with a combination of song and stories from his multi-decade career working on Broadway, in film, TV and the music industry. The event will begin with a wine and cheese reception at 7:00 PM on Friday, October 22 in the Library Community Room, with the performance beginning at 7:30. Mr. Bogaev’s performance will include songs from the many films and shows on which he has worked as well as stories of working with dozens of the world’s most renowned actors and singers. The event is free and open to the public though donations will be accepted.
THURSDAY MORNING BOOK CLUB
The next meeting is Thursday, October 14 at 10:30 AM and the selection is Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCall. This novel, which takes place in August 1974, during the time of Watergate and the Vietnam War, is quickly becoming a favorite of many book clubs and was a Booker Prize finalist.
WEDNESDAY EVENING BOOK CLUB
The next meeting is Wednesday, October 20 at 7:30 PM and the selection is The Bright Forever by Lee Martin. This novel is narrative that unfolds 30 years after a 9 year old girl sets off one evening on her bicycle in a small Indiana town to return library books, and never returns. The characters’ emotional lives are explored as they question their own culpability and their subsequent choices that have led them to where they are today.
CHESS MATES
The Chess Mates Program continues for 6 weeks, starting on Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 4:30-5:30 at the library. There will be a tournament on November 10 for those participants who attended a minimum of 4 sessions. Chess Mates is open to all children grades 1 through 12 and pre-registration is required by September 22. Please note: Parents must remain in the building throughout the duration of the class.
